Okay, so I seriously have this "I can do anything" complex, which is frustrating for my husband. Since I always have a project going, I can always find a reason to put off cleaning! Tonight's example is no different. In fact, while talking to my sweetie earlier today, I mentioned that I was going to clean both the bathrooms tonight while the midget was taking her afternoon nap. He complained about them this weekend, but I say, what's wrong with super-grody toilets?? Instead of cleaning the bathrooms, I was rolling sushi!!
On our honeymoon, waaaaay back in 1997, my brand-spankin-new husband and I went to a sushi restaurant called Sukiyaki House in Banff, Canada. Having never eaten sushi, we had no idea what we would like. Even with the prospect of being completely corny, we ordered the Love Boat! When it came out, the entire restaurant stared at us! I tried every single kind of sushi on that ridiculously HUGE wooden boat. I made it through most of it, although not caring for any of it, but when I got to the raw squid... Well, let's just say, I can't believe I didn't ralf everywhere! When I bit down on it, it immediately turned to goo and then began to firm back up as I chewed. AAAAAACCCCKKKK!! It still gives me the iggles when I think about it eleven years later!
Anyway, I bought all my supplies about a year ago (I think I spent about $15 at the asian market) and there they sat--until this evening, when I needed yet another excuse to avoid cleaning! Actually, I started last night by cooking the sushi rice, but I got too hungry to try doing it. So look at my very first California Roll! I'm pretty impressed with myself!
By the way, the winner of the 100th post giveaway is...
Briana Almengor of Pleasant Places!! Go stop by her blog and congratulate her!!
You didn't think I'd forgotten, did you??
Back to sushi! I LOVE sushi, but only the non-raw fish kind, which I suppose classifies me as an imitation-sushi-eater. The raw fish thing doesn't gross me out at all, but I ABHOR the texture of raw fish. I have tried nearly every kind of raw fish/ocean creature out there, but still have yet to find one I like. My favorite roll is the Dragon Roll, which has barbecued eel (cooked) on it.
And now, in classic Kat fashion (who I'm going to guest inquisit for the first week in December and need some practice, and yeah, I know inquisit isn't a word), tell me, do you eat sushi? If you don't, why not? If you do, what's your favorite? Are you fluent in chopsticks?? Are you interested in seeing me do a tutorial so you can roll your own sushi?

i was just going to ask if the sushi was hard to make, so a tutorial would be AWESOME! i am like you - i only eat the cooked stuff. california roll is my favorite
nice work!
Oooh, pretty! I am with Wifey. You should do a step-by-step tutorial with pictures. Besides, it would give you something else so you don't have to clean! (hee hee)
And... I think you have Blogger ADD. B.A.D.D. I love how you just switched over to announcing your winner in the middle of your post. Cracked me up!
Maybe that is what we should call ourselves... the B.A.D.D. girls!
We could start a blog about it!
Ha! Ha!

Wow! That looks good:-) I would never attempt to make my own sushi. I'm afraid I'd get sick or something weird like that.
I'm spoiled with all the great restaurants close to me. I love spider rolls. Yum!! I hope to get my kids eating it too. My son is a lost cause, but maybe I can get my 2 year old to like it.
Basically I am sad I didnt win....
I hate all things seafood...I really wish that I liked seafood, but my stomach just wants to throw it all back up if I even smell it.
This drives my husband CRAZY. He accuses me of having the eating habits of an 8 year-old. :)
Yes!! Please do a tutorial! I only eat the faux-sushi too. LOL Fake is where it's at.
It looks great :o)
I LOVE sushi!
I have heard that the rule to sushi is that you should get raw whatever you like cooked. So, if you don't like salmon, don't order it raw. But...the whole idea of it being uncooked just doesn't set well with me. And I don't care for the California rolls.
You MUST read the book "Lost on Planet China" by Martin Troost. It's hilarious. And there is this whole scene where he is not only eating a raw squid...but one that is still very much alive.
(I love the practice run with the questions!)
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Yes, I love sushi. Being from Maryland, my favorite is the Baltimore roll...crab...yum! Even though I'm not interested in making my own sushi, I would love to help you not feel like you need to clean. Husband doesn't like grody toilets? Let him scrub 'em!
I've tried Sushi on several occasions. I just can't Sushi! LOL Although I DO love me some California rolls.
Bring on the tutorial!!
BTW...my cousin had another friend come and HE bought the margaritas all night long! $0 out of my wallet. Woot-woot!!
I apologize that you were not on my blog roll. Apparently blogger isnt my best friend when it comes to those things. (your not the only one who was put on and never showed up... maybe I should blame you. hehe)
As for being a dork, I am too. I think thats why I have no friends.
i love the sushi roll!!!! i want me some california roll...please send it...and it looks fab!! good work there!
i love chopsticks...learned to love them omre in japan, which was totally amazing too! i'll have to post a pic of me then...you'll laugh pretty hard!
and, i wanna see how to roll the sushi. i would do cali rolls for sure...no raw fishes here for the chitlins and hubs.
Oh no trust me my man has no issues with going 3-5 times a day, its just that that isn't the first thing I want to smell in the morning.
I am a huge pick. LOL
And I am sorry for fibbing, I just needed the reassurance that you were my friend, and it worked.
I love sushi, but all my sushi lovin friends moved away. So every now and again I just gotta have some so I eat alone. I dont do too much of the raw stuff. California rolls are da bomb!
yCarrie, Your california roll is beautiful! All you need now is to perfect your yelling as people walk into your house and you're set.
Total and complete sushi and sashimi eater. Love it, all. As does my hubs.
tutorial would be great. I will watch it and get really excited about doing it and then *poof* nothing will come of it BUT it would be fun to watch you do it.
Oh and I hate random .org......actually it hates me. I never win :( WAH.
I think your California Rolls look great. Of course, this is coming from a non-sushi eater (or tryer). Kuddos to you for even trying it all. I can't bring myself to do it even though it seems to be the trendy thing to do. No amount of peer pressure is going to get me to try it. Sorry. (Gee, wonder where my boys get their food issues?) ;)
And, thanks for the contest. I'm so excited to receive it. That sure will help out with the holidays coming up. Do I need to send you my mailing address?
We love sushi. My husband and I get cravings for it. Any kind, raw, sashimi, sushi. You name it!!!!! I also LOVE the shrimp tempura sushi which isn't really sushi but hey.......... I may need to get some tonight!
We are Sushi FREAKS!!!!! Oh yeah! We love to make our own as well.
Ewww ick! NO I don't like seafood of any kind raw or otherwise.
It hurts my stomach just thinking about it...
Uh, I am Asian, born in Hong Kong, in fact, so natch I do chopsticks...have since I was 3 or so. :>
And I love, love, love, love, love (was that enough emphasis?) sushi -mostly the raw stuff, and oddly enough, even though I'm a huge shrimp fan, I don't like it either raw or cooked in sushi. The only other thing I don't like in sushi is sea urchin; it looks like brains and tastes like...brains! EWWWWW! My favs are salmon, tuna (but can't eat too much due to mercury concerns), unagi (eel), roe, mackerel, and squid.
I'd love to see you rolling sushi! We enjoy doing it, but we only do cooked stuff since I don't trust ourselves handling raw stuff. ;)
since my pregnancy, i have CRAVED sushi. i ate it before, but not like now. i want it ALL the time (sushi, that is). i do like the uncooked stuff, but that's off limits right now. my fav? dynamite roll and crawfish roll....YUMMY!!!
you've made me very hungry. good thing i get off work in 15 minutes. din-din, here i come!!!
I think you are amazing. Look at that California roll. It is PERFECT in every way! I am SO impressed!
